Satin, Sateen and Percale: Bedsheet Weaves Explained
Same cotton, same thread count, completely different feel. The secret? The weave. Here’s the two-minute version that’ll make you sound like a textile pro.
The 10-second version
- Satin is a weave, not a fabric. In cotton, it’s called sateen.
- Percale = crisp, matte, cool and breathable.
- Sateen = soft, smooth, gentle sheen (hello, glace cotton).
- Neither is ‘better’ — it’s about how you like to sleep.
Wait — satin is a weave?
Yep. People assume ‘satin’ is a material, but it’s actually a weave structure where threads float over several others before tucking under. That float is what creates the smooth, glossy surface. When this weave is done in cotton yarn, we call it sateen (or cotton-satin).
Percale: crisp, cool, breathable
Percale is a tight one-over-one-under weave. It feels crisp and matte — that fresh, ‘clean hotel bed’ sensation — and it’s super breathable, so it’s brilliant for warm weather and hot sleepers. Bonus: it softens beautifully over time.
Sateen: soft, smooth, a little lustrous
Sateen uses that satin float in cotton for a silkier hand-feel and a subtle sheen. It drapes more and feels warmer and more indulgent against the skin — the finish behind smooth glace cotton. Trade-off: slightly less airy than percale.
Percale is a crisp white shirt. Sateen is a silk scarf. Both lovely — just different moods.
Which weave is your match?
| If you… | Go with |
|---|---|
| Sleep hot / love a cool, crisp bed | Percale |
| Love soft, smooth, silky-feeling sheets | Sateen / glace |
| Can’t decide | Keep both — percale for summer, sateen for cooler months |
Quick questions, quick answers
Is sateen the same as satin?
Same weave, different fibre. Satin is traditionally silk or synthetic; sateen is that weave made from cotton — soft and smooth with a subtle sheen.
Which is cooler, percale or sateen?
Percale — its crisp, tight weave is more breathable, making it the better pick for hot sleepers and warm climates.
Is glace cotton a sateen?
Usually yes — glace cotton typically uses a sateen weave plus a smoothing finish, giving it that silky feel and gentle shine.
Does weave matter more than thread count?
They work together, but at the same thread count percale and sateen feel very different — so weave often matters more to comfort.
