Cotton Explained: Pure, Combed, Glace, Egyptian, Pima & ELS
“Egyptian.” “Glace.” “Sateen.” “ELS.” Cotton comes dressed in a lot of fancy words. Here’s what they actually mean — no jargon, no fluff.
The 10-second version
- Pure cotton = the comfy everyday all-rounder.
- Glace / sateen = same cotton, smoother finish and a gentle sheen.
- ELS (extra-long staple) = the premium tier — smoother, stronger, longer-lasting.
- “Egyptian” should be certified. We describe ours honestly as ELS cotton.
Pure (regular) cotton
The dependable all-rounder: breathable, absorbent, easy to wash and naturally soft. It suits almost every home and climate, and it gets softer with use. For daily sheets, it’s a smart default.
Combed cotton
Regular cotton that’s been ‘combed’ to remove the short, stray fibres before spinning. The yarn comes out smoother and stronger and pills less — a quiet little upgrade.
Glace cotton
Glace cotton is cotton finished for a smooth, lightly lustrous surface (usually a sateen weave plus a polishing finish). Silkier feel, gentle shine, still breathable — an everyday upgrade on the same fibre.
“Satin” vs “sateen” — cleared up
Plot twist: satin is a weave, not a fibre. Done in cotton, that weave is called cotton-satin or sateen — more threads float on the surface for a soft, smooth, slightly glossy finish. So “400 TC cotton satin” just means a 400 TC cotton woven the silky way.
Extra-long staple (ELS) cotton
Staple length = how long the fibres are. Longer fibres = finer, stronger, smoother yarns that pill less and feel more luxurious. ELS is the premium tier behind high-thread-count and luxury sheets — the quality you feel as smoothness and longevity.
Egyptian & Pima cotton (and an honesty note)
Egyptian cotton and Pima (branded as Supima) are famous names for ELS cottons grown in specific regions — Egyptian along the Nile, Pima in the Americas. Long fibres, soft and durable.

Quick questions, quick answers
What is glace cotton?
Cotton with a smooth, lightly lustrous finish (usually via a sateen weave). It feels silkier and has a gentle sheen while staying breathable.
Is Egyptian cotton always genuine?
Not always. ‘Egyptian cotton’ is an origin claim that should be certified. Much bedding labelled this way is simply long-staple cotton. Look for certification, or buy fabric described honestly as ELS cotton.
Satin vs sateen?
Satin is a weave with floating surface threads. Woven in cotton it’s called sateen (cotton-satin), giving a soft, smooth, slightly shiny finish — versus crisp percale.
What is extra-long staple (ELS) cotton?
Cotton with especially long fibres, which spin into finer, smoother, stronger yarns. ELS cottons (including Egyptian and Pima) feel more luxurious and last longer.
Is glace cotton good for summer?
Yes — it keeps cotton’s breathability while adding a smooth, cool feel, so it’s comfortable in warm weather.
