How to Care for Your Bedsheets and Dohars

Good cotton can last for years — or wear out fast if you’re rough with it. The good news: keeping it soft and bright takes almost no effort. Here’s the playbook.

The 10-second version

  • Wash cold/warm on gentle, with mild detergent. Don’t overload.
  • Skip bleach and fabric softener — cotton softens on its own.
  • Shade-dry or low heat. High heat is cotton’s enemy.
  • Rotate 2–3 sets so every piece lasts longer.

Washing: the golden rules

Wash cotton in cold or warm water (up to ~40°C) on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Give it room — an overloaded machine can’t clean properly and creases everything. Wash new printed sheets and dohars separately for the first couple of washes (colours can release a little at first).

❌ Skip theseChlorine bleach (weakens fibres, dulls colour) and fabric softener (leaves a residue that cuts breathability). Cotton gets softer with every wash all on its own.

Drying without the damage

Line-dry in shade when you can — gentle on fibres, kind to colours. Tumble drying? Low-to-medium heat, and pull sheets out while slightly damp to dodge wrinkles. Repeated high heat is the fastest way to age any cotton.

Ironing (totally optional)

Cotton presses easily when slightly damp, on medium heat — percale takes a crisp finish, sateen needs less. Honestly? Smoothing it by hand as you make the bed is enough for most of us.

Stain SOS

Act fast. Rinse with cold water first (hot water sets protein stains like sweat or blood), dab on a little mild detergent, then wash as usual. Go easy with harsh stain removers on prints — they can lift the colour.

Dohar care, in one line

Gentle cold wash, shade dry, and air it out now and then instead of over-washing. Cotton layers stay fresher with a little breathing room.

Storage & the rotation trick

Store sheets fully dry in a cool, dry spot out of the sun. A breathable cotton bag beats sealed plastic (which traps moisture and invites that musty smell). And the pro move: rotate two or three sets — spreading the wear means every piece lasts longer and feels newer.

Treat cotton kindly and it returns the favour — softer, brighter, and good for years.

Quick questions, quick answers

How often should I wash my sheets?

About once a week for most people, or every 10–14 days if you shower before bed. More often in hot, humid weather or with allergies.

How do I keep cotton sheets soft?

Cold/warm gentle wash, mild detergent, no softener or bleach, and low-heat or shade drying. Cotton naturally softens with each wash.

Can I machine wash a dohar?

Yes — gentle cold cycle, shade dry. That keeps pure-cotton dohars soft and the prints bright.

Why do new sheets feel a bit stiff?

New cotton often carries finishing residues from manufacturing. One or two washes removes them and the sheets soften noticeably.

Should I use fabric softener?

Best avoided — it can coat the fibres and reduce breathability and absorbency over time. Cotton softens on its own.
